The Great Gatsby Chapter 1

Tom Buchanon-He is racist

"’Civilization’s going to pieces,’ broke out Tom violently. ‘I’ve gotten to be a terrible pessimist about things. Have you read The Rise of the Colored Empires by this man Goddard?’"

"[us whites] who are the dominant race"

Daisy Buchanon- She is a sad/ heartbroken romantic.

"All right...I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool -- that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool."

Jordan Baker-Spills the beans... can't really hold a secret.

""You mean you don't know...Tom's got some woman in New York"

Tom Carraway- He is very sarcastic

"The whole town is desolate. All the cars have the left rear wheel painted black as a mourning wreath, and there's a persistent wail all night along the north shore."

  • What are your first impressions of the novel?
My first impression is that it's a book about a guys American Dream; to make it to a wealthy, and succesful life.
  • What do you think of the writing style?
I think the writing style is very sarcastic, and most definitely is casual and laidback.
  • Which colors/symbols from the "symbolism preview" activity have been mentioned so far and which characters are they mentioned in reference to?
White... It has been mentioned a lot... more so in  a racist fashion.
